What is an ARCAT?
An ARCAT is a member of an association named Alverthorpe
Retired Citizens of Abington Township. You never heard
of it? Some call it the best kept secret in Abington!
Would you believe it started 40 years ago and has been
run by volunteers with some assistance from Abington
Parks and Recreation.
Starting in 2010, Alverthorpe Retired Citizens of Abington
Township will become a part of Abington Township Department
of Parks and Recreation. It will, however, retain it’s
staff of volunteer officers who will select and run
it’s programs. Membership will be managed by the
Parks and Recreation office, and dues of $5.00 will
be paid to Abington Township. During the changeover
period, dues normally collected toward the end of the
year will be postponed until January 2010.
The ARCAT program lineup includes: A one day Amish
Wedding Tour in October, a general membership meeting
at the Ardsley Community Center in November, a Holiday
luncheon at the North Hills Country Club in December,
and a general membership meeting in February. Future
plans include: the Spring Luncheon at a local country
club in April, a tour to Penn’s Peak Dinner Theater
in Jim Thorpe. There will also be a local tour and luncheon
in May. June brings a Progressive Luncheon Tour in Maryland
and our annual picnic at Alverthorpe Park. On September
20 & 21 there will be a Leaves and Lobster Tour
in up-state New York.
Anyone interested in ARCAT membership and is 55 years
of age or older, and a resident of Abington Township
may call the Abington Township Parks and Recreation
office at 215-576-5213 to be placed on the ARCAT’s
mailing list.
