Homeland Security

The terrorist attacks of September 11th have left many concerned about the possibility of future incidents in the United States and the impact on our community. While the future is uncertain, there are things you can do to prepare for the unexpected and reduce the stress level should another emergency arise. Taking preparatory steps can reassure children that you can expect a measure of control, even in the face of such events.

Be aware of current events. It is important to be aware of current events and situations that may impact your activity, workplace, travel plans, etc. Listen to you local radio and TV and follow the advice and instructions of authorities. Information and instructions for local emergencies in Abington Township will be available on Cable TV Channel 43 and the Township's web site.

Have a family plan. It is important to have a plan to communicate with family members during an emergency. The American Red Cross has excellent suggestions and checklists to help you prepare such a plan [Download Now].

Be prepared to evacuate or shelter in place. Listen to authorities. if authorities ask you to leave your home, they have a good reason to make this request and you should heed the advice and follow instructions immediately. If you are instructed to "shelter-in-place", you should remain inside and protect yourself there.
